Tier 1 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

Tier 1 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the mandatory awareness-level training required for all staff working within CQC-registered health and social care services, as set out in the Health and Care Act 2022 and the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Code of Practice.

Lynx Training Academy delivers fully compliant Tier 1 training, ensuring organisations meet their legal obligations while building knowledge and understanding across the whole workforce.

What Tier 1 Includes

Tier 1 training is made up of two required parts—both of which must be completed:

Online Learning
A nationally recognised e-learning module that introduces:

  • Learning disability and autism awareness
  • Communication and reasonable adjustments
  • Understanding behaviour and support needs

This can be completed from any location, at a time that suits the learner.

Flexible Delivery Through Lynx

Lynx Training Academy offers flexible Tier 1 delivery options to suit organisations of all sizes:

  • Open webinars – places available from one delegate
  • Block-booked sessions – for organisations booking 25 staff or more, with agreed dates and times
  • Shift-friendly delivery – designed to support shift patterns and service needs

All Tier 1 training is delivered by NHS-approved trainers listed on the national OMMT register and meets CQC and commissioner expectations.

Certification and Compliance Support

On completion, learners receive official Tier 1 certification, and organisations receive:

✓ Attendance and completion records
✓ Evidence for CQC inspections and PIRs
✓ Support to demonstrate workforce compliance

Why Tier 1 Matters

Tier 1 training ensures:

✓ Legal compliance for organisations
✓ Consistent understanding across all staff
✓ Increased awareness of learning disability and autism
✓ Safer, more inclusive everyday practice

By delivering Tier 1 at scale and with flexibility, Lynx Training Academy helps organisations embed awareness as common practice, strengthening services and benefiting the wider community.

Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training

Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the in-depth, role-specific training required for staff who provide direct care, support or make decisions for people with a learning disability and/or autistic people. This requirement is set out in the Health and Care Act 2022 and the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Code of Practice.

Lynx Training Academy delivers fully compliant Tier 2 training, supporting organisations to meet their legal duties while embedding meaningful learning that improves practice and outcomes.

Who Tier 2 Is For

Tier 2 is required for staff in direct care or decision-making roles, including:

  • Support workers
  • Care managers and senior staff
  • Nurses and clinicians
  • Social workers
  • Allied health professionals

What Tier 2 Includes

Tier 2 training consists of two required parts—both of which must be completed:

Full-Day Face-to-Face Training
A one-day, in-person training session delivered by a trio of trainers:

  • An NHS-approved Lead Trainer
  • Experts with Lived Experience
  • A supporting facilitator to guide reflection and application

This face-to-face element is a mandatory requirement and cannot be replaced by online learning.

The session provides:

  • Deeper understanding of learning disability and autism
  • Practical application through real-life scenarios
  • Reflection on attitudes, behaviours and decision-making
  • Insight into reasonable adjustments and managing risk
  • Learning grounded in lived experience
